Queen's Story

Queen's Café and Cake was first established in Hong Kong in 1952. Its founder Mischa Yu learned his culinary skills from White Russian master chef Kurilov in the 1920s, and was one of old Shanghai’s best chefs of Russian cuisine. Mischa later moved to Hong Kong and started his own Russian restaurant and bakery which he named Queen's, when it opened the same year Queen Elizabeth II was proclaimed. Queen's nostalgic and warm décor remains to be one of its major draws, and the filming of Wong Ka Wai's famous film "Days Of Being Wild" at the restaurant has made it a popular attraction to movie fans and the public alike.

(Nougat has various origins, one of which is from ancient Greece, after which was spread to France and Eastern Europe; there’s also a saying that it was derived from turn of the century Soviet Union in 1917 after The October Revolution, where White Russian refugees brought the method of making Nougats from Russia to Shanghai. From Queen Café’s establishment in 1952 to now, Nougats is the most famous products from Queen Café’s Menu, Mischa Yu also created a unique flavour – chocolate rice crispy for its variety; crunchy rice crispy encased in rich chocolate. It’s fragrant crunchiness is also chewy from its chocolate and yet does not stick to your teeth, it is truly something that you must experience yourself!

A persistence that achieved over six decades of unchanged taste. Queen’s Café is Hong Kong’s first Russian Cuisine Restaurant, not only is Queen’s Café inextricably interwoven with Yu’s Family, it is also part of Hong Kong’s living history.

Patrick Dunn, a Hong Kong Local celebrity best described as a “Family Man”, talks about how Queen’s Café can suit everyone’s taste in his family, "Queen’s Café is perfect for my kids, my eldest daughter loves their salad, the younger daughter adores their fried fish and pasta; the twins are basically carnivores who cannot get enough of steaks or Shashlik (steak skewers), they must have it every single time. I myself find that their seafood suits me the best".
